Forty acres of wooded river bluff property that was purchased in cooperation with local philanthropist Joe and sis Boyer, the Chillicothe Park District has committed to the restoration of Coal Hollow Park to pre-European settlement conditions. The goal is to provide a park with walking trails that will introduce people to the flora and fauna that once occupied the Illinois river bluff. A portion of the trail system at Coal Hollow Park is open to the public. The 0.6 mile “Savannah Trail” is ready to be explored. The “Meadow”, “Cliff”, and “Woodland” trails are expected to be ready by Fall of 2019.
The Chillicothe Park District has been the recipient of the 2019 Illinois Clean Energy Matching Grant for the Stewardship of Coal Hollow. This grant will provide a match of $3 for every donated $1. Please help preserve and enhance this park for our community by donating.
